>>43543311In folklore fairies are tricksters they use their magic and cause mischief, which is in the West why we believe gnomes and stuff stole things from people or why people got sick. These are the same things believed heavily in Japan with Yokai, hence why Pokémon like Mawile are Fairy. What do we use to ward off fairies? Amulets such as bells, tokens of good luck, four leaf clovers, and giving them sweets to appease them.
Bugs in mythology are often attributed to good omens in particular one specific bug, the honey bee. What does the honeybee do? It provides us with sweets to ward off tricky fairies, in some civilizations bees were attributed withe the birthplace of mankind (look at the tears of Ra in Egyptian folklore). In fact Ra’s chariot was often seen as the sun, and the dung beetle would roll a ball across the land, so a scarab was likened to the gods moving the chariot itself. In Japan the dragonfly was a protector of the gods, and the god of Shinto has all sorts of bad insects warded off by the dragonfly eating them. Also do not forget the Vikings love for Mead...honey wine. Apollo was said to be able to tell the future because of a gift given to him by three honeybees. Hence why in both Europe and the world at large insects are said to ward off evil spirits and bring protection from nefarious spirits...sort of like fairies being tricksters.
So, with all that being said insects being defenders and protecting from evil spirits seems to be a great way to ward off magical no good tricksters. Don’t be confused because some Pokémon are pink and cute that they are innocent.
