>>19476585Honestly, the game is FAR from lacking. There's some missed opportunities (I just outlined some here
>>19476593 ) but it's definitely not a bad game.
Spoilers ahead!
The main antagonist of XY is Lysandre, the leader of Team Flare. Flare's goal is, ostensibly, to create a beautiful world - it turns out that Lysandre's view of a beautiful world is pretty damn warped, he's been brought to despair/insanity by humans being selfish and the world being grossly overpopulated and a massive drain on resources, and he intends to use something called the Ultimate Weapon (a three-thousand-year-old superweapon that was originally used to bring a Pokemon back from the dead, turning both the Pokemon and her trainer immortal). The Ultimate Weapon would destroy basically all life on Earth aside from the members of Team Flare - I don't recall the specifics of Y (which uses the power of Yveltal, the Destruction Pokemon, which absorbs life force), but in X, he wants to use Xerneas, who is the Life Pokemon, to turn the members of Flare immortal. When he's eventually defeated by the protag, he turns the weapon on himself and the kids - in Y, he tells them that he's pretty much just going to kill them all and it's heavily implied that he kills himself, in X, he says he's going to turn them all immortal so they're forced to watch the Earth slowly being destroyed, and it's implied that he's immortal but buried alive beneath the base.
Sycamore is the Professor of that region, and is canonically Lysandre's friend and former mentor. He later admits that he had some idea that Lysandre was going off the deep end but couldn't pluck up the courage to confront him about it, he blames himself for everything that happened, including Lysandre's (potential in X, actual in Y) death, and he believed Lysandre really was inherently right in that overpopulation COULD end up ruining the world, just that he kind of went the wrong way about it.
Actually an awesome game, I recommend it.
