You could say it's because they see potential in this guy so they stick with them to watch them grow, or you could perhaps say they like to feel needed and thus can't leave this hopeless boy alone. But in any case the end result is they support this guy and over time fall for them. Tale as old as time.
And even if you try to look at it as Misty could never like a moron like Ash, their final interaction in the anime has Misty acknowledge Ash as a reliable guy. So if his being a dumbass was stopping her from liking him before (it wasn't), that's confirmed not to be the case anymore, so all the more reason she might see him that way.
