They're not default names in the game data any more, so are they expected to come from marketing or website material? Or are official names a thing of the past?

The protagonist's mother owns a Meowth, which is talked about in the demo. The Meowth is a regular Meowth, rather than the Alolan version, as expected. One of the first revealed Pokemon for Sun and Moon was Alolan Meowth. This was intentional.

The move from Kanto to Alola is an allegory for Gamefreak trying to appeal to the people revisiting the Pokemon franchise because of Pokemon Go. The protagonist's mother's Meowth represents this demographic's past. They played Pokemon RBY probably watched the anime 20 years ago. They forgot about the franchise and got excited when PoGo and SM came out. Alolan Meowth represents this demographic's expectations for the games. They don't want a brand new Pokemon experience. They want something nostalgic. They don't want new things, they want the old. But at the same time, they know it would be boring to just have RBY remade with 3D graphics. They want something they know, but changed somehow. That's Alolan Meowth. Old but kind of different.
