And to address the point you thought you were making, the Transformers movie was made for Western audiences. It was just animated in Japan. All of the plots and characters were made in the West. When Japan took over the series with the Headmasters/GMF/Victory they changed the formula a lot, and later series like Beast Wars were completely redubbed for younger audiences. Even Japan's own shows like Transformers Go are for extremely young children.
Transformers is for the youngest age bracket in Japan because only the youngest Japanese kids play with toys that aren't model kits, and they think the idea of non-piloted robots are childish (Brave suffered a similar stigma.)
Hell, the Japanese Prime toys had their paint aps replaced with stickers and turned the weapons into robots on sprues because they wanted to trick kids into thinking they were model kits.
