Lana? Team Rocket? Wicke? Faba? Rotom? Samson Oak? Burner? Fucking Ash? How about the Pokémon, what character development did Rowlet, Melmetal, Naganadel, Togedemaru, Tsareena, Vikavolt, Turtonator, Shaymin, Eevee, or even Magearna? Or by character development did you mean them constantly bullshitting evolutions and new moves at the drop of a dime?
I will admit that the backstories characters got ranged from meh to pretty good. The entire Aether story no matter how detached it is from the games definitely has its sweet spots.
However that doesn’t change the fact that Sun and Moon’s writing overall ranged from shit to bullshit nearly every episode in terms of its character writing. From nearly rewriting characters making them worse than their game counterparts to barely even taking advantage of characters in any significant capacity; mainly Team Skull and the Trial captains, or even not using the characters at all like the Ultra Recon Squad or Sina & Dexio.
TL;DR Claiming SM is better than JN in any capacity beyond animation is dumb, delusional, and flat out wrong.
