This is not to slam on the artist. This is to say that 'soul' is not something inherent in the card or the art. The one thing that TPC has done really well is to move forward with cards that are visually appealing (especially to younger people).
If set order was chronologically reversed (this years sets being printed first and WotC sets being the most current) then there would be many times more people talking about how the 'old' cards had so much more 'soul'.
