Trying to go for a Fire-type starter here, but I keep fucking up and want to try to follow this criteria

This guy is reminiscent of like, early reptile transitioning into mammal creatures. But I don't know how to continue with it now. I feel like anything I do to flesh it out just looks pasted on. I mean, I know Charmander's fire tail and Cyndaquil's firey back look good and I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it, but I dunno.
Am I in the right thread?
