Type wheels allow for more definitive type distribution, easier matchups (type charts are HARD to teach players if you’re not just 1:1 ripping off pokemon’s types and effectivenesses), and a combat system that overall allows for individual monster abilities to push the bounds of combat. When every monster is 1 of 6 monotypes with all attacks taking on their type, you can go crazy on their signature abilities. Monster Catcher RPGs tend to die by their assumption that they can do what Pokemon does, but they can’t. A system that prioritizes a smaller number of monotypes allows for easily accessible combat and a design emphasis on making every monster have a unique play style.
