Gamefreak may have the copyright, but that doesn't make ROMhacks any less of "Pokemon game" than the officially licensed ones are. I play GBA ROMhacks because those just have the most variety to them. I'd play an XY or SuMo ROMhack in a heartbeat if they were able to do shit like having a hundred new fakemon or custom assets, but for fans developing those hacks for free out of sheer passion, that's just too much to ask of them. But the games are still fun, because the Pokemon formula is still fun.
Happiness is not a zero sum game. You can enjoy the new games for having some hot furry waifumon you can rub all over in a petting minigame, and I can enjoy something like Pokemon Clover for having challenging teams and accessible breeding and postgame content. We can both be happy Pokemon fans here; it doesn't have to be a fight.
