OP like any game you're getting into you should do the following
1. LURK MORE, find out what the fuck is going on. Starting a new game? Watch from the sidelines. See what the meta is like, understand WHY people do shit.
2. Emulate something that works. You may not quite know why it works, but eventually you'll see what makes it tick. You'll understand this basic strategy through and through and start predicting what your opponent is going to do.
3. Create your own strategy once you know what the fuck is going on. Even minor tweaks away from the build you copied is your own work. Try changing things around. Did they fail? Try something else.
Yes people are going to use cookie cutter builds, in EVERY game you play. But those builds have fundamental weaknesses and predictability running against them. Find a crack in the wall, and break on through to the other side.
