Because they already made a ton of 3D assets in gen 6 and there's no reason to abandon them. Honestly I think the Dragon Quest remake fucked up by abandoning their 3D too. I thought IX's animations were fantastic and it sucks they downgraded to something inferior.

I unironically prefer BDSP. The DQ3 remake is too much of a step back from the 3D Dragon Quest games. Battles look amazing in DQ9 for instance, now there back to boring 2D where the characters just stand in a row and they barely even interact. BDSP has its share of problems but at least in terms of battles I can say it didn't straight up abandon all 3D assets.
