For me, I was attracted to it as a kid because having adventures with magical creatures seemed like a cool idea and that's what made me a huge fan of the games.
I asked myself if the games were going down hill around gen 5 (mostly because of how many people used to shit on it). So I asked myself: "Is the core game still about having an adventure with magical creatures?"
When I realised that it was it made me realise that new Pokemon games are just new places to explore. To me, the story in the games is mostly just fluff. As long as I get to catch more Pokemon and explore new a region then there's nothing stopping me from enjoying the new games.
tl;dr If you're unsure about what to think about a new game - ask yourself if your main interest of the game is still there. Once you answer that you'll have an answer
