If the anime had taken a break we would have had a shorter Johto season, but of higher quality and with less filler, as well as avoiding the Orange League filler.
They could also have changed the protagonist, and if they still wanted to keep Ash at least we would have had a new main girl and possibly Eusine to give more freshness to that season, focused on the legends of Johto.
