Hoenns battle frontier was important, because it changed the focus, from blazing through the game as fast as possible, too actually training mons to battle against good opponents.
It also gave birth to competitive and eventual online play.
Ontop of that pokemon designs went from just existing, to being functional which allowed unique pokemon and niches to start appearing.
Every feature you love from modern games came from emerald and r/s. The old games play like a casual speedrun.
