He certainly had a dark, obsessive side, first he was obsessed with Ogerpon because she was strong, then with you, for the same reason. He wanted to beat you to prove himself that he isn't worthless and that he can be just as strong, kid has some deep self-esteem issues. Catching Terapagos was his last attempt at proving himself and it failed, and then you saved him by giving him a chance to help you. After this he realizes that because of him and his obsession no one was having fun at the academy anymore and feels deep regret.
