They look identical on map screen and only appear shiny when encountered/caught.

FYI if you encounter a shiny Pokémon during an event and the time runs out (e.g. 1pm rollover on community day), it will not remain shiny when caught. This happened once, I made my case to Niantic Support, they gave me two incenses as a courtesy.

I knew what would happen, so I decided to screen record it as evidence and contact Niantic support.

Their response was an apology that I didn't get the "alternative colored Chikorita" and a notice that "Pokémon could changes forms if caught right after the event ended", with a small gesture of two free incenses.

Not so bad. They'll be handy on Beldum community day.
