A lot happened in the meantime. The most substantial updates:
1. Turns out, I checked the wrong doc and I'm playing Rebalanced, not Rebalanced Insanity, meaning I'm not fucked after all. Great, because I hate playing while constantly looking at the hack docs for info.
I know I'll try normal nuzlocke with set battles and no items later on, but without my rule with releasing mons.
2. I wasn't paying attention and apparently I caught 4 illegal mons, i.e. Pokemon that were in my champion teams before. Of Onix, Growlithe, Dratini, and Abra I only used the last one. It evolved to Alakazam by level 25, but my team was in their 30s and I put him in the box until the later game, so he didn't really make any difference.
I released the mons and redid the encounters on these roads. Caught some fun mons I never used like Milotic or Crustle.
Btw. Recover/Water Pulse/Dragon Tail Milotic with Rock Helmet absolutely shredded Korrina's team. Too bad Gallade was full of crit moves.
