It's horribly balanced, full of nonsense RNG, and completely brain-dead in-game to the point where it's just a "press the super effective move to win" simulator and any problem can be solved by mindlessly grinding. Chess works because it's an entirely skill based game.
You know the game is sad when even people who "like" the turn based gameplay admit they only like it just because it lets them do something else while they play. If the game by itself can't hold the player's attention it's a failure as a game.
