Even the games say that the walk from your house on the edge Littleroot Town to the gym in Petalburg takes 30 minutes in-universe.
You can't just get everywhere by walking because Pokemon's world is pretty much the same as ours. The human population is the same size, the towns/cities are the same size, and people still drive cars.
