A good example of this perception is the later Mario & Luigi games when compared to the first game. While all game follow a specific structure of where to go next, the world is open enough so you can explore it at your leisure and even be punished/rewarded for it, while later games (mainly Partners in Time) got slammed by the fans for literally following a straight line, just like a certain pokemon game people either love or hate
