First it got Belly Drum, a move that few Pokemon got. It made it into the higher tiers for a while until D/P or so when it fell out of grace again, so they gave it a hidden ability of Solar Power, another ability few Pokemon got. That didn't work and so they said fuck it, gave it two Megas, and called it a day.
Saying >B-BUT IT'S GOOD NOW doesn't really help when Gamefreak had to make it good over several generations almost by force.
Doesn't help that Charizard has easily the biggest defense force around in terms of fanbase. It's become absolutely insufferable and even moreso the other two megas are actually better competitively if you want a strategy pick.
