briefly perusing the page on bog's site. overall i think the project is cool. i like the philosophy behind it, trying to cover a wide spectrum of designs, even ones that aren't to the artist's tastes, because every pokémon is someone's favorite.
my overall problems are that it's basically not pokémon. pokémon are JRPG monsters based off of Japanese mythology and pop culture. a lot of fakemon artists miss the mark because they're designing creatures and shoving them into game mechanics, when most pokémon are supposed to represent their gameplay function visually. ill try to pull up tajiri's article about monster design in a bit
also, they're just very western. part of it is the art-style reminding me of 90s nicktoons, but i think the designs themselves are exaggerated for comic effect in the way a lot of cartoon characters are and most pokémon aren't. they lack subtlety
the grass starter is described as a "carpenter pterosaur." i think the silhouette here is excellent, strong and imposing but still animalistic. i do not like the detail work though. the beak isn't just shaped like a chainsaw, it's a literal power tool growing out of its flesh. you can look at something like haxorus, garchomp, lati@s and get the impression of mechanical design without machinery weirdly grafted to them. the overalls are also too on the nose, you could probably mess up the patterning a bit and still get the indication of mario pants. to be fair it is grass/ steel so it's supposed to be mechanical but i still think it's beating you over the head
the minotaur is pretty sweet. all the hard parts are cooled lava, a clever way to integrate the story into the design. same with the star on its chest; it reminds one of a sheriff's badge without literally being one. i love how the eyes and nose are the same shape. it adds personality and flair immediately
the water one im having trouble getting, partially because it's black and white. comment too long lmao will continue l8r
