Lysandre is unironically overhated. While he does unfortunately have a design that immediately reveals he is related to Team Flare, betraying whatever twist existed, he's still a decent character.
Kalos is filled with a lot of subtle commentary on class struggles. Emma is a poor orphan living in an alleyway, the poor have it really bad in Kalos. The rich all live extravagant lives and are generally assholes like the Parfum Palace guy, who charges you in order to enter. Lysandre is the worst of them all, he's the ultimate rich asshole. One common criticism is that Lysandre is inconsistent, he wants to get rid of the horrible and ugly people but Flare is full of horrible people that just paid to get in. That's the point. Lysandre associates human value with net worth. Those poor orphans are the horrible and ugly people that need to get wiped out. The poor will eat up our resources and ruin the world. The rich deserve to survive because they worked for their money unlike the lazy poorfags and can manage resources, or at least that's what Lysandre thinks. The rich and powerful get to pass judgement on the poor.
