- Meowscarada sounds like masquerade, referring to masks. Shiny Meowscarada exchanges its pink collar/eyes for purple, another one of the three Mardi Gras colours.
- Coco means 'skull' or 'coconut', and additionally sounds like crocodile. Additionally, a dirge refers to the lamenting/funeral rites of the dead. Skeledirge’s puffy fire is a reference to the marigold flower, the national symbol for the Day of the Dead.
- Quaquaval sounds like carnival, and the peacock motif is a reference to the popular Brazilian Samba dance outfit. Quaquaval is seen dancing during its idle battle animation.
