Around Black and White. This isn't a criticism of the game itself, but It kinda shattered the illusion for me.
At the time I found something really cynical about the whole soft-reboot aspect. Essentially creating new iterations of established Pokemon, while locking all returning Pokemon to post game. It really made the Pokemon seem like more of a commodity with specific utilities, than the iconic characters my naive child brain had accepted them as.
The way GF showed more willingness to reset the "world" of Pokemon than actually update the game mechanics and change up the gameplay and try something new felt like GF had their priorities backwards.
Of course they dropped that aspect as soon as Black and White 2, but the damage was kind of done and GF's stubbornness was too apparent to me at this point.
Legends Arceus got my hopes up again, actually bothering to change up the game play and streamline the whole single player experience. But of course, that wasn't allowed to stick, we have to keep returning to status quo.
