Since an incident involving angry wild Scolipedes left him hospitalized and mentally messed for ages he ended up missing the "traditional" age of 10 to start his journey so he didn't receive his first Pokemon until years after that. His bug fascination would come back later, but his now-Feraligatr Chompers is still one of his strongest, most trustworthy mon.
QotT: Bug, of course. They loved bugs since they were young and would love watching them just vibe in the forests and bushes near his home. As he grew older and started learning/loving battles he wanted to show off the latent potential of Bug types so he became a "Forest" Gym Leader - not STRICTLY a bug specialist, but there was a focus on it (though he still throws surprises like Rhyperior into his gym teams to catch challengers off guard.)
Least favourite? Probably poison due to what happened to him as a kid. He actually actively hated Scolipedes and their entire family for donkeys years until - in an attempt to get over it, he took in an injured Venipede and nursed it back to health wherein he trained it and it evolved into a Scolipede over a long period of time.
