I really like megas as a concept, but the execution was flawed in a lot of ways. Being able to power up a pokemon with a brand new design (though that's not to say every mega design was good as there's a fair share of bad ones) and the idea of having a dedicated, telegraphed ace of a Pokemon is fun.
The main problems though are that one, having a mega stone for every mega was a huge mistake. It adds item bloat and means GameFreak have to reintroduce every single mega item every game they appear in so that all the megas can be used is such a waste of time and a complete slog for the players to go through. There should be just be one dedicated mega stone that you can only give to one pokemon at a time. Two, a lot of them don't have enough depth to them - there's only a few cases where you don't just want to whip out the mega evolution straight away. Things like Mega Sharpedo which have to balance when it wants to give up Speed Boost for raw offence or Mega Garchomp essentially being a sidegrade mixup are good but most of the others just fall flat. Third, the obvious problem of favouritism with shit like Mewtwo and Charizard. And the final, biggest problem is that GameFreak can't balance for shit, so the "You can only use one!" restriction goes from a fun little team-building exercise to a generic "These ones are bad, never use them. Always go for these" routine. Why would you ever waste your mega slot on something like Mega Audino?
I'd love for megas to come back and I really do want to see more Pokemon given megas but they really need to fix the problems surrounding them. It's GameFreak though, so removing it instead of improving it is how they'll handle not only megas but every gimmick going forward.
