XY were probably the easiest and most dumbed-down games of the entire series. They feel like KOTOR where the first segment of the game feels great with lots of potential, but then the rest of the game just seems formulaic and rushed. Lumiose City was also the worst place to navigate in any Pokemon game by far. The only thing that comes close to it is Castelia City. The biggest redeeming aspects of XY were the new Pokemon designs and the online, which Gamefreak has somehow managed to downgrade in every subsequent game.
I enjoyed Sun and Moon a lot more, but I disliked the replacement for gyms, and the Festival Plaza was so confusing that it wasn't worth bothering with it. I also disliked the Poke Pelago, since it made me feel like I was playing a mobile phone game with real-time cooldowns. I actually loved the story and waifu pandering, since that hasn't really been done in a Pokemon game before. The Gen 7 story was much more coherent than the Gens 5 and 6 stories. I think this was a wise direction rather than making the story a copy/paste of RSE again.
