Whenever they try to do something serious, it gets fucked up one way or another, whether it be because the characters were too flat (Explorers), nothing feels like it's at risk despite the game trying to take things seriously (Gates), or the plot goes batshit insane for all the wrong reasons (Super).
Also have an actual team of three or four rather than a player+partner and a tagalong third wheel. The partner formula's been beaten to death, and the only time they felt like an actual character rather than a kissass was in Super.
