Yeah, the episode was filler and overall had no consequence for story, but holy crap if that was not one of the most intense Pokemon fights in anime. Also while then Ash was not top fighter yet, this episode highlighted his other strength - fiery passion for Pokemon battles and going just bit beyond empty numbers. His opponent was yout typical competetivefag that most of the fight spend calculating shit on laptop and simulation instead of actually fighting.
Also, this is very important episode from technical point of view because it was first time when animators diverged from traditional work and used computers for coloring. I guess that was why this episode go so hard with choreography and animation, they just had more time thanks to using more efficient coloring.
