>>56875271It was actually gen 4 when GF first experimented with using the weak starter for something. In gens 4-6, the third trainer with the weak starter is just part of your friend group and takes a back seat to the main rival. Starting in gen 7, they become the main rival and the strong starter just isn't used anymore.
