It actually punishes your loss by making you start the facility all over again. Additionaly RNG is stacked against you in many cases and the advantages you gain in the story fights are taken away.
Pokemon is not challenging because there is no punishment for losing. You lose a paltry amount of money and have to redo the fight, that's it. The games don't even have the decency to revert you back to your save or some checkpoint. You don't lose the experience you got in the fight so you barely need to grind in most cases. These problems are exacerbated when you are given ways to simplify grinding but the games don't compensate. This was a problem in XY and SM especially because your levels shot up quickly but the game didn't curve around that so you didn't even need to grind and could just clobber everyone the moment you arrived. While I'm all for a lack of grinding leveling is the most basic difficulty the game has to throw at you, and if the game doesn't adjust for it then the rest won't help.
