It's not strictly necessary, but it's a nice feature to have; it'll warn you about things like invalid encounters, invalid movesets, egg moves on a non-egg mon, and other such obvious and not-so-obvious mistakes.
Pokecheck isn't really a necessarity anymore; stuff like certain TID/SID pairs being invalid, IVs/Nature/Ability being tied to PID, certain spreads being impossible, Gen 2 shiny Unowns and the like were all nothing more than limitations thanks to the PRNG or odd programming quirks to begin with.
