>>50414243Back in gen 1, the idea was that the 151 Pokemon were all there were and the Indigo Plateau was THE Pokemon League of the whole world, not just a regional thing. The rest of the world was supposed to be like real life, just with those extra 150 give-or-take creatures running around here and there, hence the references to animals like Indian elephants and real life locations like China, Russia and America (Kanto itself the real name of the Japanese region).
Gen 2 kind of payed lip service to these old ideas, like how the new mons were recent discoveries, but things didn't really add up logically. By gen 3, the idea of the Pokemon world mirroring the real world was pretty much dropped, and GF has been steadily scrubbing away real world references all while naturally adding more Pokemon to fill in the roles of real animals. For instance, the idea of predation between two Pokemon has actually become more common in dex entries. Before it was usually kind of vague, one could assume Pokemon just preyed on real animals.
But a lot of vestiges of the old lore still remain, like Pokemon being described with animal names. Most has been quietly swept away, but not quite retconned or explained. The franchise tends to dodge more uncomfortable questions.
tl;dr The franchise's lore was kind of fucked from the beginning and GF isn't interested in correcting more than they need to. Just turn off your brain bro
