After all the initial captures have been made and the first badge/trial is done, the majority of the series will be padded out with forgettable fillers like these two new titles in order to showcase the new pokemon and game locations.
It's the gems inbetween that are worth waiting for, in this instance the Gladion episode. We should be happy they put Iwane in charge of that one, at least, and didn't waste him on all the garbage inbetween.
