OP here. Wow, I didn't expect this to blow up. I guess there still is a lot of XYfags who share the same view as me.

I think they were given a generic script of XY to have Ash travel around Kalos capture a few mons, lose, and the move on to Alola. But, they shilled Greninja and created a monster with its popularity. They rewrote the script several times until they probably got word from the bosses and said something along the lines of "you've gone too far with Ash's character. We're pulling the plug on this. He will not win the league. Under no circumstances." So yes, it does deserve the laughters it gets from people. It was built on the unexpected hype of Greninja and they didn't know how to cash in the check.
