I haven't played a Pokémon game since Diamond, but I have picked up a copy of X for $15 today. My question is how deep the combat system for Pokémon has become these days. Is it just spam type advantage moves and build a general strategy or does it go deeper than that? If yes, how so?

Overall, not counting remakes, I'd say:

5 > 6 > 3 > 4 >>> 2 > 1

Gen 6 has been impressing me by a fair amount so far, but I'm not a fan on how abundant Pre-Gen 6 Pokemon are in Kalos.

I've usually preferred odd Generations to even Generations due to how Game Freak seems to always focus on old Pokemon in the even ones.

it's not just charmander.
Most starters are like this.
Hell, look at the Oshawott family. They're all just slight shade shifts.
Oshawott has a slightly turqouiseish blue, Dewott is a light blue and Samurott is a dark blue.

Chikorita family is the same way. Desaturated green -> yellow green -> really saturated green
