Ghetsis is defeated and humiliated in the first game, spending the subsequent two years plotting his revenge against N and Unova all, willing to take the power he wanted with sheer force. It’s comprehensible he became rambling mad during this time, filling himself with rage, resentment and spite. Then he loses again, this time losing his mental sanity too, unable to do anything anymore. You can see well his descent into madness. On top of that, his Hydreigon knows Frustation. Nuff said. All the battle themes (grunts and bosses) are openly menacing too. Great villains, for sure.
1. Well, the antagonists are the only aspect of the games that can make me a nostalgiafag. I love Team Rocket. Aside the yakuza/gangster inspiration, they did more bad actions out of every other team. Killing of Cubone’s mother, with subsequent kidnapping of a famous philanthropist; selling skulls and tails for profit; owning a casino with Pokémon as prizes, likely obtained through smuggling; stealing fossils, poaching Lapras, experimenting the Magikarp on Lake of Rage. And then the Silph occupation and the Radio Tower takeover. Giovanni didn’t give a shit about legendaries (or at least, until USUM), preferring to run his crime sindacate using his position as a gym leader, making money and obtaining as much power as possible. A leadership so strong that his admins do everything it takes to get in touch again with him. Maybe they are not the most original guys of the bunch, but they are without doubt the most effective villains.
