In light of everything going on right now I want to break down just what goes on between the players behind Pokemon. Right now we have three factions and each of them have their own influence on what goes on and regularly tug in their general direction which is why things can be all over the place. These people are:
Game Freak- The developer of the main series titles, creator of all original content.
Nintendo- Developer of the console that most of the games, core and spinoff, are released on.
TPC- Company formed to handle the business aspect of all of the Pokemon franchise. They are owned in part by Game Freak and Nintendo and Creatures as well. Creatures would be a fourth pillar to this group but to the best of my knowledge they haven’t done much recently other than modeling, so they largely fall under Game Freak since in the big picture they serve the same purpose (game development).
Game Freak is the smallest player here other than Creatures. They are essentially an indie company that got lucky and designed a game with a formula that can be replicated and expanded on ad infinitum. When it comes to other games made by Game Freak, everything else has been a complete flop in comparison. They don’t really need to worry about this too much though since Pokemon is a big moneymaker, and out of all of the other Pokemon ripoffs and fan games, nothing has quite been able to replicate what Game Freak did. Even the latest generations still feel like they fit in with the first designs, and most of the core team from Red/Green still work for the company. For this reason Game Freak needs Pokemon, but Pokemon also needs Game Freak because no one else can create new creatures for them to advertise.
