There are a lot of people who come here specifically to get into pointless knee-jerk arguments over nothing solely for the sake of arguing. You see it on every board that isn't about something too niche and esoteric for shitposters to pretend to understand. People will get into /v/-style console wars over absolutely anything.
And you're right, it is unhealthy. But it's not too hard to ignore low quality posts, they tend to self-contain in a handful of repetitive thread topics where they're most likely to get the (you)s and the baseds they're after. It's especially easy to ignore low quality on /vp, the local shitposters here are so spoiled by how easy it is to get replies that they're not even good at baiting anymore.
