Depends what reasons you enjoy the mystery dungeon series for. I really enjoyed explorers but I hated the SMD so much I only got about halfway through the game before I stopped playing.
It added a bunch of tedious mechanics that really hurts the dungeon crawling gameplay (e.g. neutral attacks capped at 5 damage forcing you to burn through PP and elixirs even if you're over-levelled, running into a square with an ally bumps them into the next square at the cost of some hunger and it happens unintentionally 99% of the time).
It also completely overhauled the randomised mission system that were present in explorers and replaced it with set missions that automatically unlock each individual Pokemon for you to play as (you only get 1 of each poke), and although they're set missions the difficulty fluctuates all over the place, and the strength of the poke you recruit is usually disproportionate to the mission difficulty (e.g. you get Salamence in the early game but can't get Machop (I think) because he's a bounty poke with 500+ HP).
I cbf writing more but basically if you go into it expecting the same experience as explorers then you're gonna be let down.
