Taichi didn't even want to fight Yamato, he basically forced him into it by making MetalGarurumon attack them. It was to try and knock some sense into him, not an act of aggression like Death Battle. Again, he's much more likely to rush to Greymon's side as he's done so many times before.
He was also trying to get Agumon to evolve so they could actually beat Etemon. He learned his fucking lesson, too. Maybe this concept is foreign to you, but Digimon liked to include character development in their series.
Death Battle was out of character as fuck, deal with it.
