He looked like a cute fat bean and his stubby limbs were part of his charm.
Now he kind of looks oblong and awkward, and I distinctly remember watching the DP anime and feeling noxious just looking at skinnier Pikachu's animations. They've gotten much better at making Pikachu look alright with the cute yet realistic style, but I can't help but still like fat Pikachu just a bit more.
