I would have to say Fire, because Fire type attacks are always useful to have in a team, Fire type has the best starters, and Fire is generally regarded as the best offensive type in a game where defence isn't really an option.
Fire is also likely to be the most popular typing, with some of the most memorable Pokemon. I would also consider Dragon or Dark to be the second and third best types after Fire.
