In the original pokemon games, the three starters represented difficulty modes to players. Charmander was hard mode, Squirtle was medium and Bulbasaur was easy mode.
Before you call bullshit consider the following.
>Charmander is weak to rock type and water type (the first two gyms), and not even good against electric
>Squirtle is good for rock, but nuetral to water and then weak to electric
>Bulbasaur is strong against rock, water and resists electric.
The three type dynamic represents a leniency period for how long the player has to get acclimated to the mechanics of capturing and building a diverse team. Fire has the shortest period, followed by water then grass.
You could possibly use only Bulbasaur for the first three gyms before realizing you need to catch more pokemon and level them up. The same is not true for Squirtle and immediately not true for Charmander, who shy of extreme overleveling is going to need some rattatas to buffer the hits.
Do you guys buy into this, or way Gamefreak just blindly brilliant?
