>Ash reaches Master 8 (Doesn't matter if he wins or loses, he's a Master-class trainer)
>Ends up deciding he's reached his goals in terms of battling and now has to master other routes of pokemon training to be a true Master
>Gen 9 is set a couple of years in the future with Ash just entering middle school and developing a reputation due to his Master-class achievement
>This surprises and embarrasses him at first because he mostly chilled around Pallet and other frontier locations after his stint in the World Coronation series and isn't used to people noticing his accomplishments
>Either way he has an agenda, his next step to becoming a master is to try and teach other people to be top tier trainers and these battle oriented schools tend to hold tournaments and competitions against eachother
>He can't win these by himself. He has to fight with his peers. That means in order to win against other schools he has to pay attention to and mentor other students
>While doing this he can also make strides as a researcher and academic with his goal of becoming a professor as an adult, since a full understanding of pokemon is required to be a Pokemon Master
>Meanwhile organisations like Team Rocket have started taking a much greater interest in him and are now focused on trying to recruit or defeat him with underhanded means for their goals, pulling his schoolmates into it
Seems pretty simple to write a reasonable continuation of Journeys for Ash. Granted you'd have to change up the structure a bit but SM and Journeys already did that. The battles aren't given much focus.
