I like the Tomioka era of the legacy anime for the most part, but I miss how in the pre-DP Leagues, Ash would face people he'd never met before. Just actual, one shot characters who were there to show off Pokemon that hadn't been in the anime up to that point. XY had one or two with Ash and Alain, but they rarely took up much screen time. I especially liked Ash vs. Katie in Hoenn, since her personality and style was so different from his later matches with Morrison and Tyson. Second place shout out to the Bellsprout from the Indigo League. Having it deke out Bulbasaur and Pikachu in order for Muk to make its redebut and smother it made for one of the best battles that only worked for the anime.
