>>53702017>>53702108>he wrote Lugia to be a mother goddess figureThat was pretty much the problem. If you watch the movie, it makes little sense for Lugia to have a male voice. The name, the way it looks and acts and the whale-like song all make you think it's a female creature- but then sh-HE speaks and makes things a bit awkward.
It happened because the people who made the adverts for the movie jumped the gun and gave a voice to Lugia without consulting ANYONE. The film-makers were still working on the movie when out of nowhere there were ads on TV with the voice it has now.
Shudo said that he saw one of those and "felt like he wanted to die" but what really killed him (not literally, I mean) was that he didn't insist on giving Lugia the right voice for the movie anyway. After that he lost confidence on himself and couldn't even work on the third Pokémon movie, so he had his close friend (who also worked on Minky Momo) take over for him.
>>53702126Nah, it was simply "autism". Shudo KNEW it was wrong and he couldn't get over it. Like how humans were originally supposed to be used as a literal Neural Network in The Matrix but executives thought the concept was too complicated for audiences and forced the writers to change it to "living batteries". It something that just bothers you forever, specially if you could have avoided it.
This whole thing is also why we have a mother Lugia in the anime even though Shudo had left before that episode was made. That was the crew trying to cheer him up... even though they didn't understand what was really bothering him.
