In Monster Hunter the roster was getting bloated by MHFU, so the devs did cuts, explored other gameplay mechanics, and updated older monsters when necessary to provide a more fresh game. Most of the entries since are unique instead of trying to make the past releases obsolete, but it does have caveats due to the reliance of re-releases/expansions.
